Safety gap control / "abstandsteurung"

Hungary

Hi All!
I'm new to this forum, and also a beginner in MCC. I would like to build an MCC system to control my vehicles via PC but still I'm not sure whether to choose MCC or not. My worry is about safety gap control which does not exist as in other model car controlling systems, at least not like in OpenCar or DCCar. I still like MCC the most, because of it's philosophy, the smooth acceleration/braking and the way communication with cars works. Recently I have seen the following video on YouTube:

https://youtu.be/xcN3LR5XbHM

On this video the MCC system solves safety gap control in a very natural way. The other videos I found shows that car stops, then starts again when the previous car is at least 30 cms away, which does not seem natural to me. But the above video is different, I like what I see. My question: how can such close safety gap can be achieved using MCC? Can it be achieved using densely placed reed switches and the cruise control feature? Or what is the secret?

Hello Viktor

THE video you saw is the demo from Leon van Perlo the inventor of MCC.
He probebley had a high density of reed switches at THE traffic lights.

IT also worked with THE software koploper That originaly was designed for trains.

iCar is a new software program like iTraine specialy for MCC. http://www.berros.eu/nl/icar/

This program can calculate THE space in a blok and can controle several Cars from diverend lenghts without a collision.

I use koploper till now.

Hi Viktor,

The video you refer to is not tricked. It is a shot of a live demo, I think at the Birmingham show some 2 years ago and I think the video is made by James.
Yes, in this demo there are quite some feedbacks, since it originally was built using Koploper. However the clue in this case is definitely not the amount of reed switches, but it's the software. This demo runs (probably the very first version of) iCar, that very precisely calculates the distance between the cars and controls the speeds accordingly. Crucial is that the cars are calibrated (once), which is a process you can run almost fully automated.

If you use block-oriented software such as Koploper or Rocrail, you will need to place more feedbacks and you will get less smooth behavior, although it can be greatly improved if you tune the software and know (read: invest the time to learn) how to do it. However, using iCar is so much simpler and does is almost automatically for you.

The choice we made in MCC is to put as much as possible in software and avoid additional hardware to be installed in cars or besides the road. Additional hardware needs space and consumes energy. Both are scarce, especially in small cars. And (IR) components are visible in many cases. With MCC all controls are absolutely completely invisible.

Best regards,
Leon

Thank you Jan, thank you Leon! I thought I would control the cars with Rocrail, since the trains and accessories are controlled by it, but then I consider iCar.

Thanks, best regards:

Hello Viktor,

If you are considering starting with MCC and iCar we have now a nice offer with the startset MCC. Please check our site www.mcc-modelcarparts.eu.

Hello Heinz,

Thank you! I guess you refer to the complete starting set. Unfortunately I don't need a modified vehicle, I like experimenting :-) As far as I can see, the price without a vehicle is much lower. I have 2 questions though:
- Which type of UCCI does the MS-0202 startset contain: UCCI/E, UCCI/E-s or UCCI/E-u ?
- Do you have or plan to have such a startset with the MCCdec03 decoder instead of the MCCdec02?

Thank you, best regards,
Viktor

Hello Viktor,

that's right, I mean the complete starting set.
the MS-0202 startset contains the UCCI/E-u
You can order the MS-0202 with the MCCdec03 instead of the MCCdec02.

Hi Viktor,

I'm sure Heinz can supply you with any combination of items you want. In addition to the central unit and MCCdecs you may also need/want some SWdec's, maybe an OC32 for turnouts and traffic lights, etc.
Of course feel free to discuss here anything you want, well, as long as it's related to this hobby biggrin. For details on purchase I suggest you drop Heinz an e-mail.

Best regards,
Leon

OK, thank you, I have already ordered my start pack from Heinz :-)

Best regards,
Viktor
